Bethlehem occupies the southwestern corner of Alexander County along the north shore of Lake Hickory, and NC 127 reaches it by crossing the Catawba River out of Hickory. About four and a half thousand people live across its roughly nine square miles, a good square mile of which is water. It has become one of the busier residential corners of the county, with new subdivision building sitting alongside long-established lots, and the two make for very different pool projects.
The elevation tells the story. The higher ground runs near 1,142 feet while Lake Hickory holds a full pond around 932, so there is better than two hundred feet of fall between the ridge and the water spread across the lots in between. Newer subdivisions up top are the straightforward ones — reasonably level, compacted building pads, clear crane access. The established lots dropping toward the lake carry the grade, the trees and, once the structural work is settled, much the better view.
Water-adjacent building brings the usual pair of questions. Lots that fall toward Lake Hickory — a Duke Energy impoundment of the Catawba River sitting near 932 feet — need the pool benched with a wall holding the high side, and low-lying parcels near the shoreline can carry a higher water table than the subdivision ground a mile up the hill. Both are routine work; both need identifying before design rather than after.
The common Bethlehem job is a fiberglass pool with a concrete pool deck on a newer subdivision lot up near 1,142 feet off NC 127. The second is a lake-side build with benching, a retaining wall and a stepped deck that opens toward the water and the Catawba River channel beyond it.
Because Bethlehem is a short drive across the NC 127 river bridge from Hickory, a lot of what we build here is a straight pool-and-deck package for families who want the yard finished inside one season. Crane access on the newer streets is generally uncomplicated. On the lake side the brief changes: a tanning ledge, LED lighting and a deck that steps toward the water, because the pool is sharing the yard with something worth looking at. Lighting is where that gets decided. Low, warm fixtures aimed down at the deck keep the water and the far shore visible after dark; a bright flood pointed across the yard erases both.
