The town of Catawba sits at roughly 833 feet on the eastern edge of the county, where US 70 crosses NC 10 just north of the town center. Exit 138 on I-40 is two and a half miles up the road, Statesville is about twelve miles east and Hickory about sixteen west. Being this close to the Catawba River shows up in the ground: parcels run larger and flatter than the county average, and the soil nearer the water is noticeably sandier than the heavy red clay further west.
Sandier ground digs easier and drains faster, but it holds less. On parcels toward the river bottom we pay closer attention to how the shell is bedded and how the deck sub-base is compacted, because loose material that was never properly consolidated is exactly what moves under a concrete pool deck two winters after the crew leaves.
The other river-adjacent factor is the water table. Lookout Shoals Lake sits at a full pond of about 764 feet with something like thirty-nine miles of shoreline, and on the low ground between town and the water, groundwater stands higher than most homeowners expect. A fiberglass shell is buoyant, so those sites get a hydrostatic relief valve and a gravel sump as standard equipment, not as a line item we try to sell you.
The common Catawba build is a pool with a wide stamped-concrete deck, because the lots will carry it. The second is a project toward Lookout Shoals where grade and groundwater both need answering and the deck steps down toward the view instead of sitting level. On those we set the equipment pad high and dry and run the plumbing back to it, rather than tucking the pad into the lowest corner of the yard where it will sit in standing water twice a year.
Catawba's larger parcels are why most of what we build out here is a full package rather than a pool on its own. When there is genuinely room, homeowners want the pool, a generous concrete pool deck and usually an outdoor kitchen or fire pit in the same season. Designing it as one job means one excavation, one concrete pour and one set of conduit trenches — cheaper than coming back, and considerably tidier. It also means the gas, water and low-voltage runs for an outdoor kitchen or a fire feature go in beneath the deck before it is poured, rather than being chased through finished concrete a year later.
