Hudson sits at about 1,217 feet in southern Caldwell County, bordered to the north by Lenoir, the county seat. Four-lane US 321 runs along the eastern edge of town, northwest into Lenoir and eleven miles southeast to Hickory. Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute is based here, and the town has the settled feel that comes with that — established streets, decent-sized lots, and a great many houses built into the grade rather than onto a flat pad.
Building into the grade is the defining Hudson condition. A large share of lots here have a walk-out basement or a yard that steps down behind the house, which is genuinely good news for pool design: the natural bench is often already there. What it also means is that the retaining and the deck are as much of the job as the pool itself, and the quote has to say so from the beginning.
Caldwell County climbs from roughly 900 feet along the river to nearly 6,000 up in the Blue Ridge, and at 1,217 feet Hudson is high enough for the same winter movement we design around in Granite Falls. Soils up here run to clay over weathered rock. That rock is the variable worth knowing about before the machine arrives — it changes excavation time, and it is far better found on a site visit than halfway through a dig day.
The common Hudson job is a pool on the lower bench of a stepped lot with a retaining wall and a wrapped concrete pool deck. The second is a flatter build nearer the college where the money goes into a larger deck, a fire pit or an outdoor kitchen instead of into retaining.
On a stepped Hudson lot the sensible layout usually puts the pool on the lower bench, close to the walk-out, with the deck wrapping it and a wall holding the upper grade. That keeps the water visible and usable from the house instead of stranded at the top of a bank. Where the grade is gentler we build level and put the budget into the deck and the surround rather than into structure. Either way the retaining is engineered rather than stacked: a wall holding grade behind a pool is carrying real load, and the difference between a wall built for that and a decorative one shows up in about three winters.
