Connelly Springs sits at about 1,263 feet in eastern Burke County, with I-40 forming part of its southern boundary — ten miles east to Hickory, ten west to Morganton — and US 70 as the main road through town. Lake Rhodhiss, on the Catawba, borders it to the north. The town is named for the mineral spring found on Colonel William Lewis Connelly's land, which by 1887 supported a fifty-room resort hotel beside the railroad tracks. Burke County ground along this corridor runs to clay with variable drainage, and springs and seeps are not unusual — the town's own history is the clue. A wet seam in an excavation is not a disaster, but it does change the plan: proper drainage behind the shell, a gravel sump, and a hydrostatic relief valve so the pool is not fighting groundwater the day it is drained.
The upside of the corridor is access. Lots along US 70 and near the I-40 interchanges are easy to reach with a lowboy and give a crane room to set up, which keeps install day predictable. The further you get from the corridor and up into the grade toward Valdese, the more the site visit earns its place in the process. Those upland lots are frequently worth the extra structural work: the same fall that complicates the excavation is what gives a stepped deck somewhere interesting to go, and a seating wall on the high side turns a slope into the most-used corner of the yard.
The typical Connelly Springs build is a mid-size fiberglass pool with a stamped-concrete deck on a corridor lot. The second is a wetter-site build where the drainage design leads the layout and the equipment pad is deliberately set on the high side, well clear of anything that runs after a storm.
